Oh hello, spring! The season of cherry blossoms, warmer sun and comfy flip flops has arrived! March 2019 has a lot of fashion surprises in store to go with the spring breeze. Deepa Kalukuri lists out the top trends that’ll overtake your wardrobes this season
The fashion weeks have ended, bringing with them not only newest trends this season but also controversies that brought huge fashion houses back into the headlines. From Gucci’s controversial Balaclava to Katy Perry’s racist loafers, there hasn’t been a season as much in the news for a long time. However, the best of the best was still out there on the runway, and we look at some of the most happening trends to flaunt this spring/summer.
Tie It Up and Dye!
If there’s a ‘Bandini’ (tie and dye) vintage sari in your mother’s trunk, it’s time to get it out! From Stella McCartney’s blue and white collection to Prada’s pink plush, it’s all about those earthy, comfy maxis and tops this season. Get yourself a pack of bandanas, a Gucci bamboo basket and you’re ready for that spring pool party!
Terracotta is Not Just for Décor!
How do you lap up the sunshine and not let the shades dominate your spring wardrobe? Since most luxury houses opted to go earthy this season, terracotta was one of the runaway hits. Valentino moved beyond the luxe red and painted the shades of terracotta and mud bricks on its collection. Oversized tops and pleated skirts teamed with fringed bags are a huge trend this summer. If you’re thinking these shades are just for the beach, think again! Versace and Balenciaga have a range of earthy-toned outfits for those hot summer night parties.
Ruch Is In!
Ruffles, fringes and ruched dresses aren’t going anywhere for the third year in a row. Ruching or pleating on spring colours like powder blue and soft pinks ruled the runway. Go romantic and feminine with delicate ruched skirts or dresses and pop open the champagne in style! If you missed it last month during your Valentine’s night dinner, it’s never too late. Check out Roksanda Ilincic and Givenchy’s take on these flirty and romantic spring choices.
Lace Race!
Lace is one of the most underrated gifts to the fashion world! Nothing spells feminine and spring quite as much as a nicely tailored lace top and cotton trousers for a work wardrobe in summer. It has continuously made its presence felt in the cruise collections for the past few years and, unsurprisingly, makes it back again. Victoria Beckham designed a range of comfortable monogram lace shirts and Sacai got those shorts tailored in soft white lace. Do not forget to add a pop of colour when going in for a monogram lace outfit for an edgy spring chic look.
Heads Up!
What’s a perfect spring look without our beloved hats? Valentino’s raffia sun hats were bold, big and bossy! Erdem’s was netted and Moschino’s was sketched! No matter the type of hat, make sure you stay clear of the regular fedoras this season and opt for a centennial chic hat to match with modern sophistication. Gone are the days of no risk headgear, this summer it’s about to get funky!
Printing Pride!
One trend that doesn’t seem to tire the fashion houses is the full print garment. From floral designs to clashing animal prints, it just got better this year. Looks like the designers decided to break the rules and provided a range of clashing prints on the runway. Dolce & Gabbana stayed true to the Milanese lady dresses with garden hues and floral headgear, whereas Roberto Cavalli let the animal prints take the ramp head-on.
Leotards!
Dior’s muse this season was a comfortable leotard designed in sheer and paired with Mexican printed skirts. Balenciaga gave the classic leotard a touch of party chic with off-shoulder and choker tops. Team it up with a skirt, baggy trouser or just your lace shorts, this is one look you’ve got to sport this spring.
Tutti Fruity! How do you complete your spring wardrobe without bringing out those fruity shades? Mango lush, orange hues and lemony yellows, it’s about to get all fruity! Call your favourite dressmaker and tailor up a tuxedo in all shades. Keep those gray and black tuxedos for the gloomy winters and step out in colourful ones. For inspiration, check the mustard skirt tuxedo by Escada, garden green suit by Gucci and sleek tuxedo mini dress by David Koma.
These eight trends are all set to pump up your spring wardrobe; so sit back and enjoy the season of bold choices and tasty cocktails!
